Landscape architects are use to working in 2D. Very rarely in the professional workplace do they use BIM to make 3D models. Not until recently, for many firms, did they even start using SketchUp. Using 3D modeling allows us to see real world issues more clearly. There is some thought that BIM isn’t as beneficial for work in landscape architecture. Fortunately Autodesk’s Civil 3D is a helpful tool that is able to convert between other software to create more 3D models. Most BIM sequences use the conversion of information from AutoCAD to Revit. AutoCAD and Revit don’t interact very well to transfer site information. Currently there is a program, LANDCADD, which runs in AutoCAD that works well for landscape design. A version of LANDCADD is in production to run in Revit. These two LANDCADD add-ins will make the transition smoother between AutoCAD and Revit so that site information doesn’t get lost. BIM allows people to more effectively communicate their ideas, and will be very beneficial in the future for landscape architects. Article on LANDCADD
